Challenges to this
research
- The terms volunteer and volunteering are
contested terms; there is not universal agreement on their
definitions.
- Terms like internet-mediated
volunteering, virtual volunteering, microvolunteering,
crowdsourcing, etc., are contested terms; there is not universal
agreement regarding their definitions, regarding their relationship to
each other, nor regarding their relationship to volunteering in
general.
- Multiple languages of the EU make it difficult to find existing
information related to our research topic, and to outreach
to organizations who may be able to inform this research
project.
- Many people volunteering online, and many organizations involving
volunteers online, do not think of what they are doing as online
volunteering / virtual volunteering / Internet-mediated volunteering;
it is simply "helping." Therefore, while they may hear about this
research project, they may not think it applies to them.
- The vast majority of NGOs, charities and other organizations
that involve volunteers in the EU are not tracking volunteers
and their experiences with regard to skills / career development or
social inclusion.
- There are not many associations of managers of volunteers in the EU
- people whose job is partially or wholly to recruit, support and
track volunteers at NGOs or charities.
- The very short time-frame for this project, which is targeted for
completion by mid-July 2013.
