I'm Jayne Cravens. I'm a consultant regarding communications and community engagement, primarily for nonprofits, NGOs and other mission-based organizations. I have many years of experience working with corporations, governments, foundations and other donors. For two years, I ran a corporate philanthropy program at a Fortune 500 company.

I created these corporate social responsibility (CSR) pages on my web site out of frustration of the continuing disconnect between what mission-based organizations, including schools, are trying to accomplish and what corporations and other businesses want to fund and volunteer for.

Most advice for CSR comes from people in the for-profit world who have never worked for a nonprofit, charity, public school, etc., and often has a paternal approach to working with mission-based organizations. My approach is different: I am urging the business world to be partners, not dictators, when it comes to the third sector.

Financial and In-Kind Giving Programs

• Drafting or improving mission statements, giving priorities and focus areas
• Drafting, improving or evaluating program structures, policies, procedures and guidelines
• Creating or evaluating and advising on employee giving/workplace campaigns
• Reviewing grant submissions or other proposals for assistance - or training staff to do so
• Setting up employee councils/committees to review grant submissions or other proposals for assistance
• Identifying nonprofits, public schools and others for funding partnership possibilities
• Creating, improving or evaluating grant or equipment tracking and measurement tools
• Creating or evaluating communication and collateral materials
• Training employees who oversee this program at the company

Public Relations & Crisis Communications

• Identifying messaging and strategies to create a particular corporate image regarding corporate citizenship
• Identifying community needs, gathering information about community attitudes and conducting stakeholder analysis
• Identifying messaging and strategies to counter media attention related to environmental practices, labor practices, community activities (or lack their of), a marketing campaign that has drawn negative attention, etc.
• Educating senior management on the benefits of strategic CSR programs
• Training all staff to communicate regarding CSR
